Diffractal
Overview
The Diffractal provides full spectrum sound diffusion in a single integrated diffuser. To achieve this, the self similarity property of fractals was combined with the uniform scattering property of a quadratic sound diffuser. This unique and patented design expands the bandwidth and offers the broadest spectrum of sound diffusion available.
Diffractal® 1D Nested Wood Sound Diffuser
In an effort to provide full spectrum sound diffusion in a single, integrated sound diffusing panel system, the self-similarity property of fractals was combined with the uniform scattering property of a number theoretic reflection phase grating to produce the Diffractal®. This unique and patented acoustical design expands the bandwidth of its predecessor, the QRD® 734, and offers the broadest spectrum of sound diffusion available. The Diffractal® comes in a wide variety of finishes, including wood veneer, laminates, melamine coatings and painted surfaces. It can be mounted on wall or ceiling surfaces by attachment to a provided wooden cleat. Due to its depth, it is often recessed into a wall or ceiling cavity. The standard unit size also allows for it to lay into a standard, reinforced T-Bar ceiling grid.
Problem
The bandwidth of diffusion demanded by a sound quality critical space such as a concert hall, recording control room, mastering room and high fidelity listening environment is beyond what most sound diffusing products are capable of delivering.
Solution
The Diffractal® is the first sound diffusing panel that utilizes a fractal design philosophy. It consists of nested self similar scaled diffusers, each of which covers a specific frequency range and offers wide area coverage without lobing effects. The Diffractal® contains two nested QRD® type sound diffusing elements, thus forming a diffuser within a diffuser. Each diffuser provides uniform scattering over a specific range of frequencies so that the effective bandwidth is extended. The Diffractal® can be further customized to extend into lower frequencies by either perforating the wells to add low frequency absorption, or by nesting the unit into a larger cabinet that is a larger scale version of the unit.

Acoustic Performance:
Absorption may occur from wave resonances within the wells
when they are narrow and deep and viscous losses due to pressure gradient induced air particle flows between adjacent wells. The Diffractal® provides high frequency diffusion without adding additional absorption by replacing the mid frequency QRD® wells with nested reduced scale high frequency QRD®s. The nested diffusors comprising the Diffractal® extend the high frequency diffusive performance beyond that of the QRD® 734.The graph illustrates how the Diffractal® mid frequency and high frequency nested components essentially boot strap the uniform diffusion from 500 Hz to 20 kHz. The diffusion coefficient is also compared to a flat reflective panel which exhibits decreasing diffusivity with increasing frequency.
